Indian National symbols.
Indian national flag was designed by Pingali Vengayya. It has three colours saffron at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom.At centre there is blue Asoka chakra with 24 spikes. It is made of khadi material. The ratio between the length and breadth is 3:2.
National emblem is adapted from Lion Capital of Asoka at Sarnath on 26 January 1950. Beneath the emblem there is the inscription in Sanskrit ‘Stayameva jayate’(Truth Alone Triumphs) whichwas taken from Mundaka Upanishad a part of sacred Vedas.
Jana Gana Mana written by Rabindra Nath Tagore was officially accepted as the national anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It takes about 52 seconds to sing it.
Vande mathram written by Bankim Chandre Chatterjee was officially recognized as the national song of India 24 January 1950.
Saka calendar is Indian national calendar and used alongside the Gregorian calendar. The first month of the calendar is Chaitra. It was officially introduced on March 22 1957.
India ‘s national bird is Indian peacock. The beautiful colorful bird finds mention in Indian mythology found in the Indian subcontinent. It was officially adopted in 1963.Scientific name is Pavo cristatus.
India’s national animal is Bengal Tiger. It is a majestic animal with yellow to light orange body color, with stripes ranging from dark brown to black. Tiger is also Bangladesh’s national animal. Scientific name is Panthera tigris tigris.
India’s national Tree is Indian Banyan.It has propagating roots which grow downwards and are spread out at large areas. These trees form a part of Indian culture with people worshipping it. The scientific name is Ficus bengalensis.
Mango is the national fruit of India. India is the largest producer of Mangoes. Mango is called the king of fruits. The scientific name is Mangifera indica.
Indian lotus is the national flower of India. The scientific name is Nelumbo Nucipera Gaertn.
National Aquatic Animal
Ganga Dolphin is the National Aquatic Animal. The scientific name is Platanista gangetica. This was officially declared in2010.
Ganga is the national river. It is longest river in India originating from the Himalayas and ending in the Bay of Bengal.
Hockey is the national sport of India. Hockey player Dhanchand’s birthday August 29 is celebrated as national sports day.

Elephant is the national heritage animal. It is widely mentioned in Indian mythology. The scientific name is elephas Maximus Indicus.
Indian Rupee is the national currency. It’s symbol was designed by Udyakumar.
