India is situated in South Asia. It is the second most populous country in the world. It is the seventh largest country in terms of area. Area is approximately 3.28 million sq.km. There is a great variety in climate, vegetation, landforms, language and culture of people. India is a peninsular country with two groups of islands Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar.
India’s neighbouring countries
There are seven countries that share land boundaries with India. They are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China. Sri Lanka and Maladives are island neighbours. Sri Lanka is separated from India by Palk Strait. India’s Andaman and Nicober islands share sea border with Thailand and Indoneasia.
India is situated in the northern hemisphere. India extends between Latitudes 8degree 4 min North and 37 degree 4 min North latitudes. From wet t east India is between 68 degree 7 min East and 97 degree 25 min East longitudes. The local time of longitude 82 degree 30 min East has been taken as the Indian Standard Time. This meridian in called the Standard Meridian of India.
